Our History
The borough of Hyndburn has a strong market tradition dating back to the early 1300’s. Here in Accrington we are proud to have our Grade 2 Listed Market Hall situated on the new Town Square, next door to the equally stunning Town Hall and adjacent to many prominent shopping streets.
The corner stone of this grand building was laid in May 1868 by Mr S Dugdale, a prominent figurehead in the area at that time, with the opening ceremony taking place one year later. The opening was a magnificent event fit for the grandeur of the building which brought people from far and wide and included a procession of thousands of celebrants and a full evening concert with performances from famous opera singers and pianists. The building is architecturally outstanding with carved stone figures adorning the front of the building, representing market produce, pheasants, sheep, fruit and vegetables.
Current Market
2010 was a real turning point for Accrington Market, a £2m refurbishment brought the building up to date whilst keeping its original features. We are able to operate our traditional style market stalls in an environment where we can also accommodate digital and service centered businesses.
The indoor market operates over 6 days, with the outdoor operating a mixture of new goods, used goods and fresh produce markets.
All of the Market traders pride themselves on working together providing the finest, freshest produce of the highest quality at affordable prices – guaranteed.
