A Car That Shaped My Passion

This isn’t just any Alvis; it’s the Alvis. Built by Professor Mac Hulbert, it’s been a fixture in VSCC paddocks since 1988. Growing up around vintage racing, I watched this car win trophies like the Itala and Holland Trophy and the Alvis Trophy.

It was always trailered alongside ERA R4D, another icon, on Mac’s lorry. The care and engineering that went into this car were clearly born of love for the Alvis marque. For me, this Silver Eagle encapsulates the heart of vintage motorsport: a combination of technical mastery, family history, and pure joy on the track.

Mac Hulbert left nothing to chance when creating this masterpiece. The engine, a rare six-cylinder Silver Eagle from December 1930, was extensively modified for both power and reliability. From its dry sump conversion to the billet crank and forged pistons, every element was engineered to deliver results.

The supercharger pushes 15 psi into methanol-fed twin SU carburettors, unleashing over 280 bhp. For me, these stats are impressive, but the real magic is in how the car feels to drive. It’s precise, responsive, and exhilarating.

Race-Proven Pedigree

This car isn’t just built for racing; it’s proven in competition. It has a 1:13 Silverstone lap time and a history of breaking records on hills and sprints. The choice of rear axle ratios means you can adapt it to your preferred event, whether it’s a circuit race or a hill climb. And the brakes—hydraulic, with ERA-inspired front drums—are phenomenal, giving you the confidence to push harder into corners.

I’ve seen many people shy away from methanol-fed cars, but this one dispels every misconception. It’s easy to start, idles smoothly, and gets race-ready quickly. The exterior-mounted gear lever is intuitive, and the gated gearbox is an absolute joy to operate.

Working on the car is straightforward, with quick-release body panels making maintenance a breeze. It’s a car designed for someone who wants to race without needing a team—a true driver’s machine.
