Who Can Prescribe Isotretinoin in the UK
Isotretinoin is a Prescription Only Medicine (POM)
In the United Kingdom Isotretinoin can be prescribed by the following 8 types of registered Healthcare Professionals (This list was last updated in February 2024 but is based on the new MHRA guidelines that are in force from 31st October 2023):

Consultant Dermatologist

Consultant Dermatologist
Associate Specialist Dermatologist

Nationally accredited General Practitioner with an Extended Role (GPwER)
(within a Consultant Dermatologist agreed pathway)

General Practitioners with a Special Interest (GpwSI)
(within a Consultant Dermatologist agreed pathway)
05
Junior doctor or Specialty doctor
with evidence of competency in isotretinoin initiation working under the supervision of the clinicians listed above 1-4

Band 8a or above Dermatology Clinical Nurse Specialist or Dermatology Nurse Consultant
working within a Consultant Dermatologist agreed and supervised pathway. Nurses working in the private sector should have equivalent levels of qualifications and experience

Band 8a or above Dermatology Pharmacist or Dermatology Consultant Pharmacist
working within a Consultant Dermatologist agreed and supervised pathway. Pharmacists working in the private sector should have equivalent levels of qualifications and experience
For adolescents under 18 years old – Please note that DERMACNE is not licensed to prescribe adolescents under the age of 18

Consultant Paediatrician
with specialist accreditation in dermatology and working within a Consultant Dermatologist agreed pathway) may also initiate isotretinoin
